" Mary is a natural trainer, which is rare in itself, but she is also able to switch gears and methods to suit a particular dog's needs. She is adept at reading dogs which is a skill that too many trainers lack. She also has good people skills which is a plus in any profession. "
---- Cheryl M, Dog Trainer
I grew up in rural Wisconsin, with a parade of various pets. After graduating from High School I moved to Chicago and became an x-ray technologist, working primarily in emergency/trauma, cardiology and surgery.
To de-stress, I spent my spare time with animals. I fostered cats and trained shelter dogs when I wasn’t busy competing with my own conformation or obedience dogs.
Along the way I learned about grooming from a professional handler, and also about breeding, whelping and evaluating puppies.
When I had had too much of high stress “life and death in the hospital” I started a new career with dogs. I worked in various places, starting with cleaning kennels and grooming, still working with shelter dogs and studying canine behavior. I have also worked at veterinary clinics, managed large boarding and show kennels, worked briefly at a couple puppy mills, (yes, they’re as bad as you’ve probably heard), and managed a doggie daycare.
I considered each venue a new learning experience. I have seen dogs at their pampered best and puppies getting the worst possible start in life. I have worked with happy dogs and stressed dogs, dog with health issues or behavior issues, and have seen how dogs behave while boarding, grooming, in a shelter or in a large group.
I have experience with class instruction: (puppy, beginner, intermediate advanced), clicker training, private lessons, behavior consultation, competitive obedience, conformation, tricks and agility.
I am a member of APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) and have registered with the AKC to be an evaluator and administrator of their Canine Good Citizen Test.
Combined with my continued study of behavior and training, seminar attendance, natural intuition and ability, I believe this exposure to most every breed in most every situation gives me better insight than most pet care professionals or trainers who have only done training. This is the reason I have chosen Eclipse for the name of my business.
e-klips’: v- to cause an eclipse of, to outshine, to excel.
This is my goal for myself…and for your relationship with your dog.
I currently live peacefully with 2 bichons, a standard poodle, and 4 cats, most of whom are rescues.

I always offer only humane, positive training, combining motivational and behavior modification techniques. These are based on scientific principles of learning, namely operant and classical conditioning. By understanding normal dog behavior and identifying the reasons for problem behavior, you can learn how to communicate with your dog in a way it understands, and have a better relationship.
Because I believe that training can and should be fun, the techniques I use are positive reinforcement, rewards, games, and clicker training. You will learn how to train your dog and understand its behavior. And by letting your dog know what he is doing correctly, he will enjoy success and look forward to learning even more.
Force or physical punishment, including chokers, prong collars and electronic or shock collars have no place at Eclipse Dog Training, and in fact have often been a contributing factor to the behavior problems I try to correct.
I hold occasional group classes, but focus primarily on private training and consultation to help dog owners with specific behavior problems. I also offer pre-purchase or pre-adoption counseling to help owners choose the ideal pet and prevent problems before they start, and guidance in preparing your dog for the new baby. Private training can be scheduled as single lessons or as a series, depending on the nature of the problem. Lessons can be scheduled in your home or mine, or in a neutral, mutually convenient location.
